    Why this guide exists

We spent ten years running Integrative Wellness Group (IWG) — a 6,000 sq ft integrative medicine clinic in Belmar, New Jersey. Every week, patients walked in with the same story: "I saw three 'integrative' doctors in NJ before I found you, and none of them did anything different than my regular MD."

That problem hasn't gotten better. "Integrative" has become a marketing word in New Jersey — slapped on practices that bill insurance for standard primary care plus a vitamin drip menu. So here's the checklist we'd hand a friend.

    The 10-point checklist

    1. Ask which model they actually use

A real integrative doctor in NJ can tell you, in one sentence, the framework they sequence care through. Klinghardt 5 Levels. IFM Matrix. Bredesen ReCODE. If the answer is "we look at the whole person" with no model, the protocol underneath is usually just supplements + a generic detox.

    2. Look for chronic-illness depth, not menu length

Long lists of services (IV drips, hyperbaric, ozone, peptides, hormones, weight loss, aesthetics) signal a med-spa, not a root-cause practice. The best integrative practitioners in NJ usually do fewer things, deeper.

    3. Ask how they handle Lyme, mold, and biotoxin illness

NJ's coastal humidity and tick density mean any serious integrative practice in the state must have a real position on Lyme and mold. If the answer is "we don't really treat that," they're not equipped for the chronic-illness cases NJ produces.

    4. Understand the testing philosophy

"Comprehensive labs" should mean stool, urinary mycotoxins, organic acids, DNA, and a thoughtful hormone panel — sequenced based on your story, not ordered as a bundle on day one.

    5. Confirm the practitioner training

Klinghardt Academy, IFM, A4M, Bredesen Certification, and Saponaro/Yanuck applied kinesiology are the credentials that signal a NJ doctor has gone beyond basic functional medicine.

    6. Ask about the emotional + ancestral layer

Integrative medicine that ignores trauma, family systems, and emotional drainage is half a model. This is the single most predictable reason a NJ patient relapses six months after a "successful" detox.

    7. Get clear on the support structure

Who do you message between visits? Is there an app or a portal? How fast do they reply? In NJ specifically, the difference between a member-services driven practice and a "see you in 6 weeks" practice is night and day for outcomes.

    8. Check the price honesty

Self-pay programs should publish prices. If a NJ integrative office quotes you a "personalized package" after a $400 discovery visit and won't share a number upfront, walk.

    9. Ask what happens at month six

Real integrative practices in NJ have a re-evaluation cadence, a graduation plan, and a maintenance tier. If the only path is "keep buying supplements forever," it's a supplement business with a stethoscope.

    10. Confirm pediatric and family support

Most NJ chronic-illness root causes are family-level (mold in the house, genetic SNPs, generational stress). A practice that can only see the adult is solving one corner of a five-corner room.

How Integrative You scores against this list

We built Integrative You — the practice IWG Belmar became — around exactly this checklist. Klinghardt 5 Levels as the model. Chronic illness as the focus. Klinghardt + IFM training in the founders. Family-system work built into every program. Published prices. Quarterly re-evaluation. Pediatric support inside Foundation and Concierge.

    Where to start

If you're an NJ resident, the lowest-friction first step is the free Find Your Root Cause quiz — 12 questions, no email, returns your archetype across body, mind, relationship, family, and work. Most NJ members route into Foundation; complex cases route to Private Concierge.
