    The short verdict

FlexBeam is the best-executed wearable targeted near-infrared device we have used — and it is the wrong first purchase for most people.

    1. The wavelength conversation, done correctly

    Two bands matter clinically:

    • Red, ~630–680nm — absorbed superficially. Skin, superficial wound healing, collagen.
    • Near-infrared, ~800–880nm — penetrates centimeters. Joints, muscle, deeper organ tissue, transcranial-adjacent work.

Anything marketed outside those bands is either niche or noise. What separates devices is not the wavelength list — everyone prints 660/850 on the box — it is irradiance at the distance you actually use it, and whether the device stays in contact with the target.

That contact point is FlexBeam's real advantage: strapped to a knee or across the lower abdomen, it delivers its dose at zero distance, where irradiance is highest. A panel three feet away is fighting the inverse-square law.

    2. Dose: the part everyone gets wrong

Photobiomodulation is biphasic — there is a therapeutic window, and exceeding it reduces effect.

    TargetPractical doseFrequency
    Joint / soft tissue10 min contact5–6x/week, 6–8 weeks
    Thyroid (anterior neck)6–10 min3–5x/week, cycle 8 weeks on / 2 off
    Gut / abdomen10–15 min4–5x/week
    Systemic (panel)10–20 min at 12–18 in4–5x/week

If you have been running 30-minute sessions twice a day and feel nothing, over-dosing is the most likely reason.

    3. Use case by use case

Joint and soft-tissue repair → targeted wins. Contact delivery, focused NIR, wearable during other activity. This is the clearest win and where the literature is strongest.

Thyroid and organ-specific → targeted wins. Small, deliberate, contact-based. The evidence here is early-stage; treat as adjunct, never as a replacement for thyroid management.

Systemic mitochondrial support, mood, skin → panel wins. You need square inches. A targeted device would take an hour to cover what a panel covers in twelve minutes. See our LightPathLED review for the panel side of this decision.

Transcranial brain work → neither, properly. Both are the wrong tool for real transcranial dosing; that needs a purpose-built device and, honestly, supervision.

Post-surgical and scar tissue → targeted wins, once cleared by the surgeon.

    4. What we do not claim

We do not use red light for detox, fat loss, or as an infection treatment. Where the evidence is thin, we say it is thin. That is the whole point of publishing reviews from a working clinic instead of an affiliate blog.

    5. Practical buying guidance

    1. One target, deep, hands-free? Targeted device.
    2. General wellness and you will stand in front of it? Panel.
    3. Both, staged? Panel first (broader utility per dollar), targeted second once you have identified the specific site you keep coming back to.
    4. Neither yet? If sleep, minerals, and blood sugar are not handled, fix those. Light therapy amplifies a working protocol; it does not create one.

    6. Where it fits in the bigger protocol

Photobiomodulation is a Level 1–2 tool in Klinghardt's 5 Levels framework: it supports physical tissue and nudges the autonomic system. It will not resolve a Level 3 driver, and a device purchase made in the hope that it will is the most common $1,500 mistake we see.

    Safety

Do not aim at the eyes; use the supplied shielding for facial work. Photosensitizing medications (some antibiotics, isotretinoin, St. John's Wort) warrant caution. Avoid direct application over active malignancy or the pregnant abdomen.

    The bottom line

FlexBeam earns its price when you have a named target and real consistency. If your answer to "what are you treating?" is "everything," buy a panel instead — and read our comparison of panel options before you do.
