The honest read up front
Function Health is good. It's the cleanest Level 1 testing product in the US right now. If you're a mostly-well person who wants 100+ biomarkers twice a year, buy it and don't overthink it.
This post is for the other person — the one who already bought it, ran the panel twice, has a dashboard full of yellow flags, and is no better than they were a year ago.
If that's you: you don't have a Hyman-shaped problem. You have a Level 2+ problem, and a self-serve testing product is structurally the wrong tool.
What Function Health actually is (and isn't)
Is: a venture-backed testing membership with a beautifully designed dashboard, broader panels than your PCP, and a price under $1/day. Co-founded by Mark Hyman MD. (We covered the credentials side in Is Dr. Mark Hyman Legit?.)
Isn't: a clinician. There is no doctor reviewing your specific trajectory with you every quarter. There is no one watching the patterns across your labs, your sleep, your nervous system, your relationships, your environment. It can't be — that doesn't scale to hundreds of thousands of members.
This isn't a Function Health problem. It's a category problem. Any product priced to scale to that many people is a product, not a relationship. Don't fault them for it; just don't confuse the two categories.
The three ceilings of a self-serve lab product
Ceiling 1: A dashboard tells you what, not why
Your hs-CRP is elevated. Your fasting insulin drifted up. Your ferritin is at the bottom of the range. The dashboard nudges you toward generic interventions — eat more leafy greens, sleep 8 hours, lift heavy. Useful at population scale, often useless at your scale, because it can't see why your body is doing what it's doing.
Ceiling 2: Biomarkers are only one floor of the building
Dietrich Klinghardt's 5 Levels of Healing model is the cleanest way to see this. Function Health lives entirely on Level 1 — biochemistry. Levels 2 through 5 (energy body, mental/emotional, intuitive, spiritual) don't show up on a blood panel and don't respond to a "move more, sleep more" nudge. For chronic complex cases, the answer almost always lives above Level 1.
Ceiling 3: Nobody is implementing with you
This is the one that quietly breaks the most journeys. People don't fail at root-cause healing because the protocol was wrong. They fail because nobody walked them through the first 90 days when it felt like nothing was working. A dashboard doesn't sit on a call with you when you're discouraged. A clinician does.
When Function Health is enough — be honest
- You're symptom-light, want optimization data, want earlier detection.
- You're disciplined enough to implement generic recommendations.
- You don't have a multi-year chronic-symptom backstory.
If that's you, you don't need us. Save the money, run the panel, and re-read this post in two years if anything changes.
When it stops being enough — the patterns we see weekly
- Two panels, no progress. You've run Function twice. The numbers wiggle. You feel the same.
- Stacked specialists, no quarterback. Endocrinologist, GI, derm, psych. Nobody owns the case.
- Self-prescribed protocol fatigue. You've tried AIP, low-FODMAP, carnivore, methylation supports, three binders. You can't tell what helped, what hurt, or what you're reacting to anymore.
- The labs look "fine" but you feel terrible. Classic functional-medicine sign that Level 1 isn't the operative layer for your case.
- A practitioner already told you "you're optimized" and you're still in bed at 3pm. That's the moment to climb a floor.
If three or more of those describe you, a better testing product won't move you. A clinical relationship will.
What the Foundation alternative actually looks like
Foundation is the program we built specifically for the gap Function Health structurally can't close.
- Labs of comparable depth (we'll often read your existing Function panel — no need to re-run it).
- An integrative clinician who reviews your case with you quarterly, not an AI nudging you to lift heavy.
- A 90-day root-cause map, not a perpetual dashboard.
- Self-implementation, but with someone in the loop. True to our model — we guide; you implement.
- Honest scoping. If your case is too complex for Foundation, we'll tell you on day one and route you to Private Concierge instead of keeping you in the wrong tier.
If you want the celebrity-tier equivalent of what people imagine Hyman's practice is, that's Concierge, not Foundation. (We unpacked the booking reality in Does Dr. Mark Hyman See Patients?.)
How to decide in 60 seconds
- Mostly well, want optimization data → Function Health. Buy it, use it, you're done.
- Tried it, still stuck, want a clinician → Foundation.
- Complex multi-system case, multi-provider failure history → Private Concierge.
We don't compete with Hyman or Function on Level 1. We pick up the cases their model has to leave on the table.
