What Is Estrogen Dominance?
Estrogen dominance occurs when estrogen levels are disproportionately high relative to progesterone — from excess production, poor detoxification, insufficient progesterone, or xenoestrogen exposure.
Symptoms
- Heavy or painful periods, breast tenderness
- Weight gain (hips, thighs, belly)
- Mood swings, anxiety, irritability
- Bloating, fibroids, endometriosis
- Brain fog, fatigue, headaches
The Estrogen Detox Pathway
Phase 1: Hydroxylation
Estrogen is converted into metabolites. The 2-OH pathway is protective; 4-OH and 16-OH pathways carry increased risk.
Phase 2: Methylation and Conjugation
Requires adequate B vitamins, magnesium, and methylation support.
Phase 3: Elimination
Conjugated estrogens are excreted through bile and stool. Poor gut health can cause reabsorption.
Natural Detox Strategies
- DIM — supports the protective 2-OH pathway
- Calcium D-Glucarate — prevents estrogen reabsorption
- Cruciferous vegetables — natural DIM sources
- Fiber — 30-40g daily to bind and eliminate estrogen
- Liver support — milk thistle, NAC, dandelion root
- Reduce xenoestrogens — glass containers, clean personal care products
