    What is the most accurate mold test?

    There is no single most accurate mold test. Urine mycotoxin panels assess the person, ERMI and HERTSMI-2 assess the building, and VCS is a cheap screen — the right one depends on which question you are asking.

    Testing the body when the real question is the building wastes money, and vice versa. Most people who are genuinely unwell in a water-damaged space need something from both sides: a building signature and a body-side picture, read together with the exposure timeline.

    Are urine mycotoxin tests reliable?

    They are useful as one input, not as a diagnosis. There are no agreed reference ranges across labs, and provoked collections read differently from unprovoked ones.

    Two labs can score the same sample differently, so a number alone means little. It carries weight when it matches a documented exposure, a symptom timeline and other markers, and it means very little on its own.

    ERMI vs HERTSMI-2 — what is the difference?

    ERMI scores 36 mould species in house dust. HERTSMI-2 is a shorter five-species score designed to judge whether a building is safe for a sensitised person to re-enter.

    HERTSMI-2 is usually the practical one when the decision is move back in or not. ERMI gives a broader picture and is more useful during investigation. Both depend heavily on where and how the dust was sampled.
