    Shoemaker Protocol vs Klinghardt Protocol

Two of the best-known frameworks for mold illness. Shoemaker is stepwise and biomarker-driven. Klinghardt is layered and treats terrain, infection and nervous system together.

    Choose Shoemaker if…

    • You want a defined, evidence-anchored sequence
    • Your biomarkers fit the CIRS picture cleanly
    • You prefer measurable checkpoints between steps

    Choose Klinghardt if…

    • Your picture includes infections and nervous-system involvement
    • Previous stepwise attempts stalled
    • You want terrain and stress physiology addressed together

    Choose Integrative You if…

    • You want elements of both sequenced to your own case
    • You want testing before protocol, not a template
    • You want implementation support, not a PDF

Shoemaker Protocol vs Klinghardt Protocol: the questions people actually ask

Shoemaker protocol vs Klinghardt protocol — what is the difference?

Shoemaker is a stepwise biomarker-driven protocol for CIRS: remove exposure, bind, then correct specific immune markers in order. Klinghardt works in layers, addressing terrain, chronic infections and the nervous system alongside detoxification.

The underlying disagreement is about order. Shoemaker treats the sequence itself as the active ingredient and measures between steps. Klinghardt treats the person as a system where fixing one layer without the others tends to stall. Both agree on the first move: get out of the exposure.

Which one is right for mold illness?

It depends on whether your case is clean or complicated. Clean biotoxin pictures often respond well to a stepwise protocol; layered pictures with infections, mast cell activity and dysautonomia usually need more than one layer at once.

Neither framework is a diagnosis. Testing comes first: a mycotoxin panel, an honest environmental assessment of the building, and markers relevant to your symptoms. Any protocol started before the exposure is found is a protocol you will repeat.

    Can the two be combined?

In practice most experienced clinicians do combine them — Shoemaker's measurement discipline with Klinghardt's attention to terrain and nervous system.

What matters is not the label on the protocol but whether drainage pathways are open before binders are pushed, whether exposure is genuinely removed, and whether the plan is paced to what you can implement. Aggressive binding in a depleted system is the most common reason people feel worse.
