Why You Crash at 3 PM (And It's Not Lunch)

    Dr. Nick Carruthers·May 10, 2026·6 min read

    The short answer

Why You Crash at 3 PM (And It's Not Lunch)

You blame lunch. It's actually cortisol, dysglycemia, and a nervous system that's been running on fumes since 7 AM.

    The Crash You Schedule Around

You know the exact time. 2:45. 3:15. Your brain dims, your eyelids weigh ten pounds, you reach for coffee or sugar. You blame lunch. You're partly right and mostly wrong.

    The Real Mechanism

    Three things are conspiring:

    1. Cortisol's natural mid-afternoon dip

Cortisol peaks 30 min after waking, then declines through the day. The dip around 2-4 PM is normal — but if your morning cortisol is blunted (chronic stress flattens the curve), the afternoon dip drops you into the basement.

    2. Reactive hypoglycemia

A carb-heavy lunch (sandwich, pasta, rice bowl) spikes insulin. Insulin overshoots. Blood sugar drops below where it started 90 minutes later. Your brain — which can't store glucose — panics.

    3. Mitochondrial sluggishness

If your mitochondria are taxed (chronic inflammation, toxins, nutrient deficits), they can't keep producing ATP at midday demand. You feel it as fatigue, not as biochemistry, but it's biochemistry.

    The Five-Day Fix

    1. Protein-led breakfast within 60 minutes of waking. 30g+ protein. This sets the cortisol/glucose curve for the whole day.
    2. Lunch = protein + fat + fiber, low starch. Save the carbs for dinner.
    3. 10-minute walk after lunch. Drops post-meal glucose 20-30%. Free.
    4. No caffeine after noon. Lets cortisol rise on its own.
    5. Hydrate + electrolytes. Most "fatigue" at 3 PM is dehydration + sodium loss.

If you do these five and still crash hard at 3 PM after 5 days, the issue is upstream — adrenal rhythm, thyroid conversion, or mitochondrial. That's a workup, not a willpower problem.

    What We Look At Clinically

    • Diurnal cortisol (4-point salivary or DUTCH)
    • Continuous glucose monitor for 2 weeks
    • Ferritin, B12, vitamin D
    • Free T3 + reverse T3
    • Mitochondrial markers (organic acids test)

    The Next Step

You don't need more coffee. You need better signal.
