The Bucket, Not the Trigger
Allergy symptoms appear when total load exceeds what the system can buffer. Pollen is rarely the whole load — it sits on top of food histamine, alcohol, poor sleep, gut inflammation and often an indoor mould exposure nobody has looked for.
This is why the same pollen count produces a wrecked spring one year and a mild one the next. The trigger was constant; the buffer was not.
Histamine Clearance
Histamine is released and then cleared, mostly by DAO in the gut lining and HNMT inside cells. When the gut lining is inflamed, DAO activity falls, so histamine released during allergy season is cleared more slowly and symptoms last longer.
People in this pattern usually notice that wine, aged cheese, leftovers and fermented foods hit harder in spring than in winter. That is the clearance bottleneck showing itself.
When It Is Not Just Allergy
Year-round symptoms, loss of smell, facial pressure or symptoms that worsen in one building point away from simple pollen allergy and toward chronic sinusitis, fungal colonisation or indoor mould exposure.
Antihistamines will partially mask all of these, which is why a long antihistamine history without resolution is itself a clue worth following.
