You Didn't Stop Feeling. You Turned the Volume Down.

    The short answer

You Didn't Stop Feeling. You Turned the Volume Down.

You still work, provide, train and show up. But joy feels distant. For high-functioning men, numbness is often a system that learned to protect you — not a character flaw.

You Didn't Stop Feeling. You Turned the Volume Down.

    By Dr. Nick Carruthers

Sometimes the issue is not that you feel too much.

It is that you have felt too much for too long — and your system has learned to turn the volume down.

You may still function. You still work, provide, train, parent, make decisions and show up. From the outside, nothing is wrong. You are the reliable one.

But joy feels distant. Connection feels harder. Your kid tells you something great and you hear yourself say "that's awesome, buddy" from somewhere a few feet behind your own face. Nothing feels terrible enough to explain it — but very little feels fully alive either.

Nobody trained you for this one

Most men who build something were rewarded early for one skill: stay steady under pressure. Don't flinch. Handle it.

That skill works. It gets payroll made, deals closed and families through hard seasons. The problem is that the dial you use to turn down fear and frustration is usually the same dial that controls joy, desire and closeness. You don't get to mute one channel. You turn down the whole board.

Do that for a quarter and it's a strategy. Do it for a decade and it becomes the default setting.

What numbness is — and what it isn't

Numbness is not a diagnosis. It can have many possible causes: chronic stress, poor sleep, grief that never got space, burnout, depression, medication effects, hormonal or other physical factors. That's exactly why it deserves attention instead of a verdict.

And it is not something you solve by forcing a breakthrough. You can't white-knuckle your way into feeling. The same "push harder" approach that turned the volume down will not turn it back up.

    Start smaller

    1. Notice without judging. Say it plainly, even just to yourself: "I feel disconnected today." No fix attached. Naming it is information, not weakness.

    2. Create one low-demand moment of sensory connection. A walk without a podcast. Music you actually loved at 22. Ten minutes of morning sunlight. A long shower. One meal without a screen. You're not chasing a feeling — you're giving your system a safe signal.

    3. Tell one trusted person the truth. Not a full confession. One sentence: "I've been running on autopilot and I don't love it." Your partner, a brother, an old friend. Isolation is where numbness gets comfortable.

    4. Get qualified help if it's sticking. If this is persistent, distressing, or affecting your relationships and daily life, reach out to a licensed mental-health professional. That's not quitting. That's what serious people do with serious problems.

If you ever have thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 (US) or contact local emergency services right away.

    The real goal

The goal is not to become overwhelmed by your emotions.

The goal is to build enough safety that you don't have to disappear from them.

Your family doesn't need a man who never feels anything. They need the one who's actually in the room.
