Overrated, Overpriced, Over-Hyped: The Therapies Wellness Won't Stop Selling You get started
The wellness industry has a problem. It has discovered that expensive sounds like advanced. A generation of biohackers, optimizers, and frustrated patients are pouring tens of thousands of dollars into therapies that produce a short-lived high, a brief lab bump, and zero durable change.
This is the Black Sheep take. We use some of these tools in specific clinical contexts. Most people using them are wasting money they should be spending on foundations.
Stem Cell Therapy: $20,000 for a Temporary Boost
Stem cell injections are sold as regenerative miracles. The reality:
- The vast majority of injected stem cells do not engraft. They circulate, signal briefly, and clear.
- Most reported benefit is paracrine signaling — temporary anti-inflammatory effect.
- That same effect can be driven by addressing root causes — gut, food, sleep, toxic load — for a fraction of the cost.
- Clinics promising "long-term reversal" rarely show 12 and 24-month follow-up imaging. Ask. You'll see why.
Where stem cells actually help: severe orthopedic injury where conservative care has truly failed. That's a small percentage of the people getting them.
Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBOT): A Tool, Not a Lifestyle
HBOT has real, documented clinical uses — radiation injury, non-healing diabetic wounds, decompression sickness, TBI in specific protocols.
But the boutique HBOT clinic model — 40 sessions for $15,000 to "biohack your mitochondria" — is mostly selling oxygen-rich relaxation. If your mitochondria are dysfunctional because you're eating ultra-processed food, sleeping 5 hours, carrying mold and metals, and never moving, no amount of pressurized oxygen will fix that.
Use HBOT for: specific clinical indications. Don't use it as: your wellness shortcut.
Peptides: The New Supplement Hype Cycle
BPC-157, TB-500, CJC, Ipamorelin, GHK-Cu — peptides have flooded wellness clinics. Some have real mechanisms. Some have almost no human data. Most are being prescribed off-label by clinicians who learned about them on a podcast.
Problems: long-term safety data is sparse, quality control on compounded peptides varies wildly, stacking 4–8 peptides simultaneously has zero clinical evidence, and most "peptide responders" are responding to attention to their health for the first time.
Vitamin IV Drips: An Expensive Way to Pee Out Nutrients
The IV drip lounge is the most successful wellness fraud of the decade.
- Most fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) cannot be effectively delivered IV.
- Most water-soluble vitamins (B, C) saturate quickly and are urinated out within hours.
- The "energy" people feel is largely rapid hydration and saline volume — a glass of water with minerals would have given them.
- Glutathione push is one of the few defensible IV protocols, and only when methylation is addressed.
If your nutrient status is bad enough to need IV, your gut is the problem. Fix that.
GLP-1 Drugs (Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro): The Weight Comes Back
GLP-1 agonists work. They suppress appetite, slow gastric emptying, and produce real weight loss. They also:
- Cause significant muscle loss (up to 40% of total weight lost) — accelerating sarcopenia and metabolic decline.
- Are associated with gastroparesis, pancreatitis, and gallbladder disease.
- Require lifetime use — when stopped, the vast majority regain the weight, often plus more.
- Do not address why the body was metabolically dysregulated — insulin resistance, inflammation, gut dysbiosis, stress physiology, sleep loss, micronutrient deficits.
These drugs are an enormous gift to the pharmaceutical industry and a long-term loss for the patient who never addressed the metabolic root cause.
The Pattern
Every therapy on this list:
- Produces a short-term effect that feels like progress
- Costs a lot
- Distracts from the foundations that would actually produce durable change
- Requires ongoing use to maintain the effect

What we recommend instead
We're not anti-tool. We use bioresonance, PEMF, red light, sauna, neurofeedback, thermography in our practice. The difference: we use them as amplifiers on top of foundations, not as shortcuts around foundations.
Foundations first: personalized food, mineral repletion (HTMA-guided), drainage open, mitochondria fed, nervous system regulated, root causes addressed. Then — and only then — tools become powerful.
