What Is the Best Test for Hormone Imbalance?

The short answer

It depends on the question. Blood tests show hormone levels at one moment. Dried urine testing (like DUTCH) also shows how hormones are broken down. For thyroid, a full panel (TSH, free T4, free T3 and antibodies) tells far more than TSH alone.

Why timing matters

Sex hormones change across the cycle. A test drawn on the wrong day can look normal while you feel anything but.

For menopause care, ACOG notes that routine hormone testing is often not recommended because levels fluctuate and treatment is generally guided by symptoms.
