Red Light Therapy: What Actually Matters When You Buy a Panel get started

Red light therapy — formally photobiomodulation (PBM) — is one of the most over-marketed, under-understood tools in wellness. Most panels are sold on lumens, marketing photos, and influencer codes. None of those things matter.

    What red light actually does

Specific wavelengths penetrate skin and tissue, are absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase in your mitochondria, and increase ATP, reduce oxidative stress, and improve cellular signaling. The downstream effects are well-documented:

    • Skin collagen and wound healing
    • Joint pain and recovery
    • Thyroid support
    • Brain — cognitive function, mood, neuroinflammation
    • Hair regrowth
    • Mitochondrial energy
    • Lowered systemic inflammation

    The wavelengths that matter

    • 630–660 nm (red) — surface tissue, skin, hair, superficial inflammation
    • 810–850 nm (near-infrared) — penetrates deeper, reaches joints, brain, organs
    • 1064 nm (deep NIR) — used in some advanced devices for the deepest penetration

    What the marketing hides

    • Irradiance — measured in mW/cm² at a specific distance. Anything under ~50 mW/cm² at 6 inches is weak.
    • Distance matters more than time. Doubling the distance cuts the dose by ~75%.
    • EMF. Cheap panels leak.
    • Flicker. Cheap drivers create flicker that disrupts the nervous system.

    How to dose

More is not better. The biphasic dose-response means too much light reverses the benefit. General target: 10–20 minutes per area, 6–18 inches away, 3–5 days per week.

    Panel vs targeted (FlexBeam-style)

    • Panel — best for whole-body, skin, mood, daily mitochondrial dose
    • Targeted — best for one specific joint, scar, or organ that needs deep penetration

    Where it fits

Red light is an amplifier. It accelerates healing the body is already capable of. It does not replace fixing why you're inflamed in the first place — gut, food, mold, infection, stress.
