Integrative Medicine: Root-Cause Healing for Complex, Chronic Cases

You've been told your labs are 'normal' but you feel anything but. You've tried elimination diets, three rounds of supplements, two functional doctors. You're not crazy — you're carrying a stack of root causes nobody mapped in the right order. Integrative medicine, done properly, finds the actual cause in 90 days, not the diagnosis on the chart.

Start with your own pattern — 13 questions, about 4 minutes, no email required.

What integrative medicine actually is — and isn't

Integrative medicine is the clinical practice of treating the whole person — biology, biochemistry, nervous system, and lived environment — to find and resolve the upstream cause of symptoms, not just suppress them. It draws on conventional medicine when it's the right tool, and on functional, biological, and mind-body medicine when they are.

What it isn't is a vague mix of acupuncture and essential oils stapled onto a conventional visit. Real integrative medicine is rigorous: comprehensive testing, sequenced protocols, longitudinal tracking, and a clinician who understands that the same symptom in two patients can require opposite interventions.

For a side-by-side breakdown, read integrative medicine vs functional medicine — they overlap but aren't synonyms. Functional medicine sits inside integrative medicine; integrative goes further by adding mind-body, family-systems, and biological-medicine tools.

    Why most patients arrive frustrated

By the time someone finds us, the pattern is almost identical:

    • Conventional medicine ran a basic panel, found nothing actionable, and offered a prescription for the loudest symptom.
    • A first round of functional medicine identified a few things (food sensitivities, mild gut dysbiosis), prescribed a long supplement list, and the patient improved 20% before plateauing.
    • A second practitioner added biohacking devices, peptides, or hormones — incremental wins, no real resolution.

What's missing isn't more supplements. It's hierarchy: knowing which root cause to address first, which one second, and which symptoms are downstream of which. Without that sequencing, you can have every "correct" intervention on the table and still go in circles.

That's the gap our Foundation Membership and DNA Precision Program exist to close.

The 5-layer clinical framework we use

    1. Drainage & terrain

Before any kill phase, before any aggressive detox: open the exit routes. Liver, kidney, lymph, bowel. Patients who skip this layer create Herxheimer reactions, rashes, sleep crashes, and decide "natural medicine doesn't work for me." It works fine — they just started in the wrong place.

    2. Infection load — including the ones nobody tests for

Borrelia, Bartonella, Babesia, EBV, HSV, Candida overgrowth, SIBO, H. pylori, parasites. Most "mystery" chronic illness is some combination of these. Specialty panels (IGeneX, Vibrant, GI-MAP) — not LabCorp's IgG screens — are how you find them.

    3. Biotoxin & heavy-metal burden

Mold mycotoxins, mercury, aluminium, lead, glyphosate. These don't show up on standard bloodwork but drive a huge share of unexplained inflammation. See our mold illness pillar for the testing + clearance protocols.

    4. Mitochondrial, hormonal & immune rebuild

Once burden drops, the body's manufacturing capacity has to come back online: ATP production, hormone synthesis, immune calibration. Methylation cofactors, mitochondrial support, targeted hormonal precursors, immune modulation (not suppression).

    5. Nervous system & ancestral layer

Vagal tone, limbic retraining, somatic work, and — for stalled cases — family-systems and ancestral work. This is the layer 95% of clinics skip and the one Dr. Klinghardt named as the most common reason recovery plateaus. When the system is locked in sympathetic-dominant survival, no protocol stabilises.

What testing actually reveals (and what to skip)

Testing is only useful if it changes the protocol. We use a tight panel that maps to the 5 layers above, then add specialty tests when the case demands them.

    • DUTCH Complete — HPA axis, sex hormones, melatonin, and methylation snapshot.
    • GI-MAP or Vibrant Gut Zoomer — pathogen panel, dysbiosis markers, intestinal permeability.
    • Organic Acids Test (OAT) — mitochondrial, fungal, detox, and neurotransmitter markers in one urine sample.
    • Mycotoxin panel (RealTime Labs / GPL-MycoTOX / Vibrant) — mold burden, not just exposure.
    • IGeneX / Vibrant tick-borne panel — when chronic Lyme co-infections are on the differential.
    • Functional bloodwork — read against functional ranges, not "normal-but-trending-toward-disease."
    • DNA Precision profile — methylation, detox, neurotransmitter, and inflammation SNPs that determine which protocols will actually work for you.

What we skip unless clinically indicated: hair tests sold by the same lab that "interprets" them; food-sensitivity panels in isolation (almost always positive, rarely actionable); generic "wellness panels" that screen for everything and decide nothing.

    What healing actually looks like — months 1, 3, 6, 12

Month 1 — Comprehensive intake, full panel results, root-cause map. You learn the hierarchy of what's driving symptoms. Energy often improves 15–25% just from opening drainage and removing the obvious irritants.

Month 3 — Layer 2 (infection load) is engaged. This is the messiest stretch. Done well, you start sleeping deeper, brain fog lifts in pockets, autoimmune flares space out. Done wrong (skipping drainage), this is when patients fire their practitioner.

Month 6 — Biotoxins and metals are clearing. Hormones start to stabilise on their own as burden drops. Most patients report a "I haven't felt like this in years" moment in this window.

Month 12 — Mitochondrial and immune rebuild are mature. Nervous-system work is locking in the gains. You're not "in protocol" — you're living, with maintenance routines, and the original symptoms have largely resolved or become manageable.

If you're not on a trajectory like this after a year with any integrative practitioner, the sequencing is wrong. Get a second opinion.

How our three programs map to where you are

Most integrative clinics offer one product: their boutique service. We deliberately built three doors because complex chronic illness shows up at very different intensities.

    Foundation Membership

The standard starting point. Functional labs, a personalised root-cause plan, clinician-led support. Right for: chronic symptoms without a clear diagnosis; first serious functional-medicine attempt; you want a structured program with real accountability.

    DNA Precision Program

For when generic functional medicine has stalled. We map your methylation, detox, hormone, and neurotransmitter SNPs and rebuild the protocol around your actual genotype. Right for: you've done functional medicine and plateaued; you're sensitive to supplements; you want protocols sequenced to your biology.

    Black Sheep Business

For founders, executives, and high-performers whose health is the limiting factor in their work. 90-day root-cause sprint at executive pace, with concierge-grade support. Right for: time matters more than money; you're carrying a team or company; you need to be functional now, not in 18 months.

Not sure which fits? Start with our Health Decode ($47) — a structured intake that produces a personalised recommendation in under a week.

Integrative medicine in NJ (and everywhere else)

We're the successor practice to Integrative Wellness Group in Belmar, New Jersey, so a large share of our patients are still New Jersey patients — Monmouth, Ocean, Bergen, Essex, Middlesex. NJ is a hard state to be chronically sick in: it sits in the tick belt, it has coastal humidity and older housing stock that produces a steady stream of mold cases, and the two overlap constantly.

Everything on this page is delivered virtually, so where you live changes nothing about the protocol. If you're searching specifically for integrative medicine in NJ or a functional medicine doctor in New Jersey, start there — it covers labs, insurance, and how virtual care works for NJ residents. Condition-specific NJ pages: Lyme, mold, MCAS.

If you'd rather see the testing side first, functional medicine testing explains which 200+ biomarkers we run and why.

    S.M.Age 38 · 9 months
    Presented with
Chronic fatigue, joint pain, brain fog for 6 years. Three functional-medicine practitioners. Improved 20%, never resolved.
    What we found
Mold colonisation from previous apartment, low-grade Bartonella, MTHFR + COMT compound heterozygote driving methylation collapse. Adrenals were the symptom, not the cause.
    Outcome
Energy back to pre-illness baseline. Joint pain resolved. Returned to teaching full-time. Now on maintenance.
    R.K.Age 42 · 11 months
    Presented with
Hashimoto's, hair loss, mood crashes, weight gain that wouldn't budge despite 'perfect' diet and conventional thyroid support.
    What we found
    H. pylori driving systemic inflammation, estrogen detox SNPs blocked, chronic EBV reactivation. Thyroid was downstream of all three.
    Outcome
Antibodies down 80%. Hair regrew. Lost 22 lb without targeting weight. Off two prescriptions.
    T.D.Age 51 · 14 months
    Presented with
Post-explant BII. Removed implants 3 years prior. Still had chronic pain, dysautonomia, mast-cell symptoms, sleep collapse.
    What we found
Residual mycotoxin load, mercury accumulation from old dental work, mast cells stuck in 'on'. Nervous system in sympathetic dominance.
    Outcome
MCAS in remission. Sleeping 7+ hours. Off three of four prescriptions. Returned to triathlon training.

    Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between integrative and functional medicine?

Functional medicine focuses on the biochemical root causes of disease (gut, hormones, detox pathways, nutrient deficiencies). Integrative medicine includes all of that AND adds mind-body, family-systems, biological medicine, and selective use of conventional tools. Functional medicine sits inside integrative medicine — you can do functional without being integrative, but not the other way around.

Is integrative medicine covered by insurance?

Lab work and conventional consultations often are. The integrative consultations themselves usually aren't, because insurance pays for diagnosis-and-prescribe, not for the 60–90 minutes it takes to actually map a complex case. We provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement where applicable.

How long until I feel better?

Most patients feel meaningful improvement in 4–8 weeks (drainage + obvious irritants removed). Full resolution of multi-layer chronic illness typically takes 9–18 months. Anyone promising 30-day cures for chronic conditions is overselling — and you'll plateau in 60 days.

Do I have to do everything at once?

No, and please don't. The single most common reason integrative protocols fail is patients trying to do all five layers in parallel. We sequence deliberately: drainage first, then infection, then biotoxin, then rebuild, then nervous system. Skipping order is why most 'I tried functional medicine' stories end in disappointment.

Do I need to live near your clinic?

No. Our three programs are virtual-first. Members are in 14 countries. Labs are mailed; consults are video. Our in-person work is reserved for the small subset of cases that genuinely require ART or hands-on biological medicine — and we'll tell you upfront if you're one of them.

What if I've already tried functional medicine and it didn't work?

That's actually our most common patient. Almost always the issue is one of two things: (1) sequencing was wrong — they treated layer 3 before layer 1 — or (2) the genotype wasn't mapped, so the protocol was generic when your biology required specificity. The DNA Precision Program exists exactly for this case.
